SARI-SARING FIRST TIME EXPERIENCE JUNE 29, 2010

It took us a lot of time thinking what to present for our performance.I'm quite bother with it because I know it was not that good, but one thing is for sure, we enjoyed it.
I never expect that some of my classmates did not experience even simple thing like biking especially my classmate for he he is a boy. All of my guy friends know how to ride a bike. On the other hand, it doesn't necessarily mean that all boys should know how to do biking. "Napabilib naman ako sa isang group for eating an  exotic food like frog and to the other group for they shout from a building. I also want to experience watching a 3D movie like chechemons. "
From that activity, you would really see how creative the students in CTRA13 for they are able to apply it in their drawings.
I realized that it's also nice to draw or create something that you have inspirations than making something out of nothing and you would just say that "nothing!. It just come out!"
        -----Ma. Arnielyn N. Arpon------

All children are artists. The problem is how to remain an artist once he grows up. -- Pablo Picasso

To be creative, one must let go of all preconceived notions and just see things for the first time. Never over-think, just let your thoughts flow.

Its very typical for me to be pressured when creating an artwork, and that makes it doubly hard to truly be able to create something.

So I would have to agree that thinking too hard on how something should come out is too logical, and it takes out the real essence of being creative.

As I thought about these things...I remembered our exercise about trying to design  something to sit on by using a ballet performance as our inspiration. it was easy at first, but when I began to run out of ideas, I got frustrated and went back to my usual over-thinking self. Then I watched Kenneth Cobonpue's (a Cebuano furniture designer) interview yesterday on TV.

“THE WORLD DOESN’T NEED (just) another chair or table because there are (already) enough out there.”

Whoa. Now that hit me right smack in the face. :D

Don't let anyone rob you of your imagination, your creativity, or your curiosity. It's your place in the world; it's your life. Go on and do all you can with it, and make it the life you want to live.-Mae Jemison

Nilay nilay

Bowled over in playing bowling. ^_^

First time experiences are really one-of-a-kind. I've never played bowling before. EVER. So when our group decided to try bowling for our 'extraordinary experience' homework, I was ecstatic.

When I arrived at the bowling alley with my friend, I was a bit unsure on what to do. This was a first, I thought, so heck,  who cares if I fail in my first shot?

So there I was, playing and just having a really goofy time at the bowling alley. After several attempts, I managed to hit 9 pins in just two deliveries!!

It was really a fun experience, but its sort of complicated to really go into the details because  you really have to experience it to be able to feel the level of fun that I felt.

I do hope next time, I'd be able to this more often!!:D

Re-formatted Evaluation - Dalagang Filipina

QCB Performance

What is it?- The video clip showed an interpretative ballet performance on the song Dalagang Filipina.

How is it put together?- There was very little variation on the dancers, which were all females. The choreography was ok, although I thought it lacked the 'oomph' factor in the dance. There was also some costume changes, although it contributed only a little plus point to the overall performance.

How does it stimulate my senses?- Like I said before, the choreography lacked that special connection with the audience and also with the music. Listening to the song was pure bliss, but watching the dance made me feel 'bitin'. The steps and movements were great, but I really thought that it wasn't in-sync with the music.

What does this work mean to me?- The performance portrayed the different facets of being a Filipina - the being determined, fierce, loving, protective, and being 'mahinhin', among others.

STEPS Performance

What is it?- Like the first clip, the video showed an interpretative ballet performance on the song Dalagang Filipina.

How is it put together?- The performance was a little more varied than the first, because they had male ballet performers and some costume contrasts. their choreography was also wonderful, because every move blended perfectly with the rhythm of the song. I'd also give them plus points for the costumes of the red dancers - high heels and hats.

How does it stimulate my senses?- The above mentioned facts contributed a lot as to how I perceived their performance. The opposing dance steps, the contrasting colors of their costumes, and the being 'caught in the middle' of the male dancers all gave more flavor and emotion to the performance.

What does this work mean to me?- My interpretation of the dance is that it was showing the contrasting qui\alites of Western ladies and dalagang Filipinas. Sensitivity, gracefulness, and being gentle but determined was what I saw from the ballerinas portraying the dalagang Filipinas. On the other hand, sensuality, aggressiveness and fierceness is what I think was being portrayed by the 'Western' lady dancers.

@ Mam Caragay - Yung time indicated in the blog posts are not accurate, mali po yung time namin kahit manila yung fino-follow na time zone eh. Sorry po. :)

nakakaloka...

BOWLING EXPERIENCE

I always wanted to try bowling before. But every time my friends were planning to play, I was always unavailable. So I just tried to satisfy myself in playing bowling using my kuya’s mobile phone. Luckily I have CTRA 13 class, so whether I like it or not (in my case, I really like it), I must allot some time for bowling to be able to accomplish our homework.

I went to the UP bowling center without any idea on what’s going to happen. I did not know how much it costs, I was not aware that I have to wear rubber shoes and I had no idea how to play! But thank goodness my bowling experience went just fine. After I inquired to the cashier, manong immediately gave me a piece of paper. At first I was like, “what I am going to do with this?”  Then manong told me that it was the scoring sheet and he explained how to fill it up. While he was explaining, that’s when I noticed the two big signs telling straight to my face: “rubber shoes STRICTLY required.” I looked down on my feet wishing that my doll shoes would turn into rubber shoes (obviously it did not happen) then I looked back to manong. I was waiting for him to reprimand me about the shoes I was wearing but good thing he was not strict as the sign was saying. So finally after all my dilemmas, I was able to throw my very first shot! It rolled straight and fast and then boom! I jumped for joy. I was able to hit 2 pins! I immediately followed my second and third shots. Five pins were left. I believe it was a pretty good score for a first timer like me. I continued to play and play and play.  And for my best record, three pins were left!

The bowling experience was indeed very fun! I don’t know why but while I was playing bowling, it seemed that I was the cute little Hanna again running, screaming and laughing with my friends in the streets of our village. This experience also gave me a sense of accomplishment because after several tries, finally I was able to play an actual bowling without using any keypads and screen. I hope that someday I could bring my family there so that we could play bowling together. I believe that will be more exciting!

It’s my first time to play bowling. (june 24,2010)

Actually I’m not feeling good today because yesterday I lost my wallet. It feels like I lost my identity too. I’m so affected with that happening. I confessed it to my mom and she told me to move on and so I did.

Excitement reigns in my heart, the next day after we have decided of playing bowling to be activity. It was my first you know. There’s a noon time show in TV5 which is the PUA CHU KANG and their episode that day was about bowling and I get interested to it. Though I don’t have any experiences, I find it hard even though I’m just watching but CTRA 13 make way for me to experience it. When I’m at the bowling court I’m so excited. My first try was good; unfortunately in the midst of my game I hit no duck pins. So sad!
I thought when playing something that is new to you should be that and informative of every rule but I have learned that as a beginner I have to enjoy it first and then the process of learning will follow. Nice day. I love it and at least I forgotten my problem.

INSPIRATION

Today’s activity was challenging but fun! It was my first time to draw something out of an inspiration. I admit it was hard at first because I felt the pressure. Time was running, my classmates are almost done, Ms. Kitty was observing us and still there was nothing written on my paper! But when my faucet of ideas started flowing, I could not help but get excited to draw all of my thoughts. And because I had too many ideas, I ended up drawing three objects. The first one was a table inspired with the skirt of the ballerina. Second was a chair with four legs, inspired by the hair of a ballerina and lastly a chair which has three wheels inspired with one of the dance formations of the ballerinas. I was satisfied with my work but I believe that I can still improve it. Until now I am thinking how to organize and combine my thoughts to be able to create a unique design.

I am really happy that I am part of the CTRA 13 class. The activities are different and exciting! For our next assignment, we have to do something out of the ordinary. Let’s see what’s going to happen!

@ Hanna - Nandito pa yung slideshow oh.. Gilid ng page. :)

Ano Daw???

HEHEHEHEHe

 DALAGANG FILIPINA ;-) (-: {June 24,2010}
What is it? It’s a recital and members of QCB and STEPS performing a ballet dance inspired with dalagang Filipina. Their performance is showing the types of dalagang Filipina now; the preserved one and the one that is being influenced by the Western.
How it put together? For me it was put together by the help of the choreographer, ballet dancers, inspirations and concept and the beautiful music.
How does this stimulate our senses? It stimulates my senses through their performance and how they showed their intentions in dancing .I could feel my nerve especially in part when the music goes exciting and becomes challenging where there’s lifting and running.
How does this means to me.?  The presentations means to me because first and foremost their inspirations is the dalagang Filipina and it reminds that I should study hard because it’s my dream to send my daughters in a ballet school.
STEPS over QCB!

Ever since I have known the ballet dance, plus the beautiful choreography in Barbie in the Nutcracker, THE 12 DANCING PRINCESSES  and Barbie in the Swan Lake, I really liked it a lot. It kind of means a lot to me because it is my dream to send my daughters in a ballet school, someday. Gosh! They look so nice, so slim, so elegant, and very graceful. It’s like they owned the dance floor.
It was my first time to peeped and see two presentations about ballet that was inspired to a dalagang filipina. We were assigned to compare those two presentations and choose which I like. Quite hard but I have chosen the STEPS over QCB. Well they both begin with few performers and ended with numerous ballerinas but the choreography in the STEPS fits the music especially at the challenging part where there’s lifting and turnings. What convince me more is the boys who were vey expressive when it comes to dancing? I love the music,,sobra,.. I have seen lots of events in one stage. There time that you would feel the ‘nakakapalanindig balahibo’. They amazed me.  The concentration was there. And the STEPS ended their performance dramatically. Aside from that there's a variety of dalagang filipina which is so true.
It’s so nice that we dalagang Filipina is the inspiration of their show. The way they move, inagt na ingat sila, showing that no matter how far we are sa kabihasnan natin noon, dalagang Filipina are still preserve.

Dalagang Filipina - Sino nga ba??

After several failed attempts in watching the two ‘Dalagang Filipina’ videos in class, FINALLY, napanood ko narin. With music this time. Haha.

Comparing the two videos, I'd have to say I liked the 'STEPS' (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SsXTzIrBM8A&feature=related) version over the 'QCB'(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qai2ChrcHJc).

Tama sila Jayson and Hanna in saying that QCB focused more on the technichalities of the dance over the emotions that it would communicate to the audience.

STEPS showed something QCB didn't have - conflict. The part where the lady in red danced just a little bit after the lady in white & yellow dress? I think it showed conflicting points of view about the 'typical dalagang filipina'. (or something like that. Haha.) Basta kasi the first ballerina danced a bit more fluid than the other who had jazzy moves incorporated in her choreography... so ang dating sakin si lady in white and yellow parang siya yung talagang 'dalagang filipina' while the other one was 'modernized' na - di na pure, kumbaga may halo na siya.

...and then may guy pa na kasama sa dance, and ang naging impression ko sa sayaw niya parang nalilito siya which girl is which. Sino ba talaga ang 'dalagang filipina'? The graceful, modest lady or the more agressive and sensual one?

One last plus point sa STEPS is the fact that yung red ballerinas were wearing high heels.

HIGH HEELS ATEeehh.
Lume-level up! (@_@)

Nashock ako kasi di talaga madaling sumayaw (especially ballet for that matter,) ng naka-high heels, lalo na pag di sanay! Excuse me lang talaga no. When I was in my last year in high school we had a  performance ng ballroom dancing. I was wearing half an inch of heels noon. (Hanna, di ko kaya yung 1 1/2 mo. :D )  GRABE KAYA ANG HIRAP. Hahaha. Maybe kasi I'm not used to walking with skyscraper shoes, what more to dance in them diba.

So there, sayang talaga, maganda rin sana yung QCB kasi may pa-'change costume-change costume' pa sila sa last part ng performance. But I really felt STEPS communicated better with their audience.

Wish ko lang marunong din ako nun. HAHA. Dream on, Irene! ;)

-Irene Legiralde

DALAGANG FILIPINA

I love watching dance presentations because I do dance simple routines as well. When I watched the two videos of Dalagang Filipina at YouTube, I was really amazed. I admire how they danced gracefully which jibe with the music at the same time. I can see and feel their emotions even though the videos were poor in quality because I can sense it through the steps they executed.  How I wish I was there to be able to watch them dance live!

The first video which was entitled Dalagang Filipina QCB was a pure ballet performance. All of the dancers were females. At the beginning of the video, there were three ballerinas focused by a spotlight. I believe that these ballerinas were symbolizing the three main islands of the Philippines namely: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao.  They danced according to the culture of the island they were representing. But one thing in common among them was that their dance really showed the qualities of a typical dalagang Filipina before - conservative, lady-like and feminine. The music they used was mellow and instrumental that's why it was pleasing to hear. Their movements as well were light and refined thus it was relaxing to watch. The emotions which they wanted to convey were very visible as well.

The second video was entitled Dalagang Filipina STEPS. The second group showed variation with their dance. They did not only focus with ballet instead they incorporated jazz. They also performed different stunts with the help of the male ballet dancers. These stunts gave an exciting feeling to their performance. The music they used was also instrumental and it was pleasing to the ears. Two sides of dalagang filipina were shown in their dance. First was the typical filipina and second was the modern one. The modernized dalagang filipina wore a western inspired red costume and danced in an aggressive manner. The typical dalagang filipina wore the usual conservative clothing. Stronger emotions were shown with the help of the male dancers.

From the two dance presentations, the second one (Dalagang Filipina Steps) captured my heart more.  From a simple beginning, it gradually catches attention until the end while the first video (Dalagang Filipina QCB) started simple and i find it somehow boring until the end. I think it was because QCB focused too much on ballet which was okay but STEPS added twists in their dance by executing dances other than ballet which for me, was better. In my opinion, the part wherein there was a red lady dancing in heels was a plus point for the second presentation. I experienced dancing wearing one and a half inch high heels and it was not that easy. I also believe that males dancing ballet are very interesting and unique. That is one thing I saw in STEPS which I really liked compared to QCB (all of the dancers are females).  The “liftings” and exhibitions in STEPS also excite me. But both dance routines inspire me to pursue my passion in dancing and I hope that someday I will be able to move and groove gracefully like them too!

These pictures were taken during my second summer workshop recital. :) The  Dalagang Filipina videos made me reminisce about the whole experience I had before...I miss them so much!!

STEPS ba o QCB?

-go STEPS!

-ma. HANNA joy c. MICU

What is art? (recap / reflection on 06.15.10’s activity)

Art is really everywhere. As old as our race, it has been a form of expression for humans.

We had our first major activity today – out of the confines of CIDL 133, we wandered around the campus, searching for different art expressions. From street signs to graffiti, to murals, statues and sculptures, we captured them all in photography. It’s really funny, because we found art in the most trivial things such as nail polishes and mobile advertisements. We even photographed a young boy (unfortunately it wasn’t a good creative shot, we only used a cell phone camera) just because his smile was so honest (and he was much too happy to have his picture taken).

I agree with Jayson that art is really subjective. I may think that this certain thing is art, while the others might not agree.

But despite those different viewpoints (and the heat of the day when we went ‘art-hunting’ – ITS BOILING HOT IN DILIMAN!), we still learned a lot about what art really is.

ART = LIFE.

-Irene Legiralde

A beautiful life - or not??

Its the year 2003. I entered high school and learned to think like an adult. Responsibilities were given to me, and I thought I handled them properly. Mistakes were plentiful, but life went on.

Its 2007. I'm entering college for the first time. New friends, new places, new experiences. My intellectual capacities, my self-discipline, my moral values. Everything is being tested. Wrong decisions → heavy consequences → learning experiences. Is it really worth it? Am I working towards my goal or am I just riding the waves? Is this really how life is supposed to be? Is my life beautiful despite all this?

Fast forward to 2010. I changed my academic path. Transferring to another degree meant hard work, but it was also another chance in proving myself, anther chance at life. New responsibilities are given, along with a renewed trust. Its been a long journey, but I know this isn't the end. I'll keep trying, and I'll never stop learning. Now comes my epiphany - your life will be beautiful, only if you decide it to be.

And I know now that I do have a beautiful life.

- Irene Legiralde

So wala palang bago. (hehehehehe)

Meron palng kakaiba at bago. (hehehehehe)

Kwento ng nangyari ngayon (June 15, 20210)
Sometimes things that you think easy and simple are the things that are hard to find. As I pronounce the word “ART” I remembered my grade school and junior high days. Bond papers, crayons, pencil and ruler’ gosh those things are the basic tools for making an art but when you are about to start you pause for a while and then you’ll know that imagination is one of the invisible tools in making art not just material things listed above.
Art is everywhere, they said, but if you swim its deepest ocean you would know that there are factors to be considered in knowing what art really is. A course being offered in CHE helped me (which is CTRA 13) and it made me smile upon knowing that Art is not that easy to be recognized.
It was 10’oclock in the morning, quite hot we were assigned to roam around the campus and look for some art. We were in a hurry that we forget to bring umbrellas and fans to at least lessen the heat and make us feel better while our little brain is thinking. I grabbed the chance of making those times as our bonding moments (thanks CTRA13). Honestly saying that activity requires lot of time. We even have a difficulty (not really but somewhat like that, bcoz it took us so long before we finish it) because we have hard time in classifying to which that thing belongs. One hour wasn’t enough for us to find the perfect one that suits to what we are seeking
I learned that day, all things need a serious and deeper thinking and I shouldn’t belittle some things for a reason that, those are a jigsaw puzzle and labyrinth that takes time too to be accomplished.

Kwento tungkol sa nangyari kanina. :)

HEHEHEHEHE'S ART EXPERIENCE

PLEASE READ: These pictures were taken using a cellphone's camera only so the quality of some pictures are not that good. :)

1. MEETS THE NEEDS OF THE ARTIST

Artists need inspiration. This simple artwork meets the needs of an artist. By its different shapes and colors, it can inspire an artist to create a new artwork with much beauty!

2. ELEVATES COMMON PLACE

Without the beautiful abstract painting, that corridor may be a boring and unexciting place to stay. However the plain looking place became a cool "tambayan" because the abstract painting enhanced the mood and atmosphere of the corridor.

3. PROTESTS INJUSTICE AND RAISES SOCIAL AWARENESS

A common piece of material may have a deeper meaning. One good example of which is this tall brown rock. At a glance, it looks like a rock is misplaced out of nowhere. However through this rock the people longing for peace expressed themselves and they wanted others to be also aware of it.

4. REFLECTS THE SOCIAL AND CULTURAL CONTEXT

This four wheeled cart is one of the "only in the Philippines" seen objects. Because of this useful artwork, the Filipino culture (that is we love to eat street foods) is seen!

5. RECORDS AND COMMEMORATES EXPERIENCE

Art is also used for commemorating unforgettable moments. The picture seen above is an artwork along the sidewalk UP. It may be simple and straightforward but it brings back memories.

6. EXPRESSES CHAOS

This old building was formerly the grade school building of UPIS. The building itself is an art. Its structures, designs and paintings are considered art. However this piece of art was abandoned. From a useful structure with a positive aura, it became an artwork that expresses fear and also chaos.

7. CREATES ORDER AND HARMONY

Road signs and symbols are also a form of art. The colors and shapes in it guide people to lessen accidents    and creates order and harmony.

8. STIMULATES THE INTELLECTUAL AND FIRES EMOTIONS

With this piece of art, Filipinos are reminded of the mighty acts of Adnres Bonifacio. It gives a strong emotion of gratitude. Because of his heroic deeds we are able to experience the freedom we are enjoying now.

9. EXPRESSES FANTASY

This statue is named Lorna. Notice that her pen is missing? It is believed that at night that statue comes to life to look for her lost pen. Whether you believe it or not, the truth is, this is just an artwork which expresses fantasy!

10. EXPRESSES RELIGIOUS BELIEFS

A simple Novena book is boring to read. That is why arts is used to encourage more people to be more faithful in their beliefs. Art is also used to express which faith people are believing.

11. IMMORTALIZES

Even though tita Cory passed away last year, this yellow ribbon immortalizes the democracy that she imposed in our country.

12. TRUTH

Are you familiar with the saying, "Ang bata, hindi nagsisinungaling." Because of this old saying, we asked a child to draw because we believed that children are innocent thus their artworks reflect truth.

13. ENHANCES ENVIRONMENT

Not a common trash bin right? This unique trash bin for us is an artwork which helps in enhancing the environment. Because of its extraordinary form, it catches attention and eventually encourages people to throw their garbage properly.

14. BEAUTY
Advertisements are also a form of art. By looking at this "Gandang Ricky Reyes" ad, beauty is expressed. It  tells the consumers that if they want to achieve a beautiful hair, "gatas lang ang katapat mo noh!"

Beautiful Life...

("beautiful life")

May sarili akong mundo, isang mundong walang nakakapasok. Hanggang isang araw...

Natuto akong maging masaya.

MAGANDANG MAGANDA! \m/ rok-en-rol!

Is My Life Beautiful??

I often see or hear the word beauty or beautiful almost everywhere. When I turn on the television, I see advertisements link their products with beauty. When I go shopping I notice cosmetic products labelled with the word "beautiful." I also hear my ates say, "Wow! ang ganda ng damit. Bagay sa akin yan." When we pass by the highways filled with tall billboards, I hear my mom say, "ang ganda ni Karylle jan, simple lang!" or my kuya utter, "sexy ni Angel Locsin, ang ganda pa." When my dad sees new model of cars he would tell my mom, "Ang ganda nito oh, pag nabenta na yung lumang kotse eto na bibilhin ko." Sometimes I do not agree on how they judge things as beautiful. I believe that people have different standards for "beauty" or "beautiful," that's why I find the saying "beauty is in the eye of the beholder" very true.

Allow me to list down some facts about my life:

1. I have clothes, shelter and I eat three times a day. (sometimes 6!)
2. I am physically fit and emotionally stable. ( I think so..)
3. I have a complete happy family!!
4. We are financially okay.
5. I sleep with a soft pillow and a blanket.
6. I have a loyal and sweet cat named mimi, 2 turtles and a chicken named nokma. (try to read our chicken's name backwards. :D)
7. I have thoughtful friends and a wonderful best friend.
8. I study in a prestigious university.
9. I can do a lot of things like dancing, drawing, cooking, walking, talking, singing (although it rains when I sing..^^), writing, reading, etc.
10. I have a merciful and loving God.

Maybe as you read the facts I listed above, you would think that my life is already beautiful. But I believe it is more right to say that those things make me lucky. Yes! I am a lucky person. And I know that there are a lot of fortunate people like me and but it does not mean that our lives are beautiful. Some people have lesser fortunes but they live their lives with beauty. For me, to have a beautiful life, you should put meaning in to it. Fortunes are just the spices of a beautiful life. By putting meaning in to your life, it is like adding the main ingredient to your recipe.

How am I going to add the main ingredient in my life? The answer is I have to offer my fortunes to the Lord by sharing it to others. These fortunes are not only the material things but also my time and talent. So going back to the question, is my life beautiful? I say, not yet but I am halfway there! :)
